What Looking at Learning Measures

Looking at Learning measures the amount of time devoted to various learning activities and participation level of students during those activities. All measurement is done from a student’s perspective.

Looking at Learning measures the following:

  • How are students grouped during their work? Groupings are defined as Whole Class, Small Group, Individual Student, or Small Group/Individual (e.g. alone or with a partner).
  • Who is leading the learning activity? Either the instructor or the students themselves.
  • What are the students being asked to do? The Student Activities range from listening to doing an experiment.
  • What thinking or understanding process does the activity have the students focus on? The cognitive reason for the activity ranges from exploring big ideas to evaluating work?
  • What level of participation in each of the activities is present in the classroom during the activity? Participation levels range from as little as 20% to full participation of all students.
  • Looking at Learning measurements allow teachers to know what mix of activities and the corresponding participation levels are present during their instruction. Changes in teaching strategies can be easily documented using the tool.
